# Write the answer so it can be lifted intact.

> What AEO is, how to write an answer a system can extract, what Google documents about snippets and AI features, and what structure cannot do.

Search engines and AI assistants can show an answer before they show a link. AEO is the discipline of writing and structuring content so that the answer they extract is the one you would have given.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that a search engine or an AI assistant can extract a clear, accurate and self-contained answer from it. It concerns the form of a page: where the answer sits, whether it stands alone, and whether the page says plainly what it is about. It does not decide whether the answer is believed; that depends on evidence and on independent sources.

## What an answer engine does

An answer engine returns a response, not a list. Three surfaces work this way.

- **Featured snippets** Google describes them as special boxes where the format of a regular result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first ([Google Search Central, featured snippets](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/featured-snippets)).
- **AI Overviews and AI Mode** Google states that both may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, to develop a response ([Google Search Central, AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)).
- **Generative engines** The paper that introduced the term GEO describes them as systems that synthesize information from multiple sources and summarize it with a language model ([arXiv:2311.09735](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735)).

In each case text is reused outside its page. A passage that depends on the paragraph before it, or on a heading that is not carried over, loses its meaning there.

## What makes an answer extractable

These are editorial practices. They are reasoning, not documented rules: none of the sources cited here publishes how a passage is selected.

| Practice | What it looks like | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Answer first | The direct answer in the first sentences under the heading | A passage that answers can be used as it stands |
| One question per section | A heading that states the question or the subject, in the words people use | The system can match the section to the query |
| Self-contained sentences | The subject is named, not referred to as "it" or "this approach" | The passage still makes sense when lifted out |
| Definitions that stand alone | "X is…" in one or two sentences | A definition can be reused without its context |
| Lists and tables for structured facts | Steps as a numbered list, comparisons as a table | The structure survives extraction |
| Facts with their conditions | A figure with its source, date and scope | An answer that drops the condition becomes wrong |
| Text, not images of text | Important content written in the page | Google's best practices include making sure "important content is in text form" |

A page written to be extracted, without anything worth extracting, is only tidy.

## What Google documents

Four statements set the limits of AEO on Google.

**A featured snippet cannot be requested.** To the question of how to mark a page as a featured snippet, Google answers: "You can't. Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a user's search request" ([Google Search Central, featured snippets](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/featured-snippets)).

**AI features need no special markup.** "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" ([Google Search Central, AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)).

**Eligibility is the same as for search.** To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

**Extraction can be limited, and that has a cost.** The `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet` and `max-snippet` controls restrict what Google may show. A page that forbids snippets also withdraws from the answers built from them. The same documentation lists these controls for AI features.

Structured data has its place: Google's best practices include making sure structured data matches the visible text of the page. Markup that states what the page does not show is not a shortcut.

## What AEO cannot do

**It cannot make an answer true.** A well-structured page with a weak claim is a well-structured weak claim.

**It cannot make an answer trusted.** Structure does not supply corroboration. That is the subject of [generative engine optimization](https://mohammedteto.com/generative-engine-optimization/).

**It cannot fix an unclear entity.** If it is unclear which person or organization a page is about, the answer can be attributed to the wrong one. See [entity optimization](https://mohammedteto.com/entity-optimization/).

**It cannot be assumed to work.** Whether passages are in fact extracted is observed, per engine and over time. See [AI search intelligence](https://mohammedteto.com/ai-search-intelligence/).

## A page reviewed for extraction

A review asks the same questions of each important page.

1. **Which question does this page answer?** If there are five, are they in five sections?
2. **Where is the answer?** In the first sentences of the section, or after three paragraphs of context?
3. **Does each key sentence stand alone?** Read it out of context: is the subject still clear?
4. **Is every figure sourced and dated?**
5. **Is the important content in text?** Not in an image, a slider or a script that may not be rendered.
6. **Does the structured data say what the page says?**
7. **Is the page allowed to be shown?** Indexable, with snippets permitted.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is answer engine optimization?

It is the practice of structuring content so that a search engine or an AI assistant can extract a clear, accurate and self-contained answer from it: the answer placed first, one question per section, sentences that make sense out of context.

### What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO concerns the form of the answer on your own page. GEO concerns whether generative systems use and cite you at all, which also depends on evidence and on independent sources. The first is about extraction, the second about selection.

### Can I make Google show my page as a featured snippet?

No. Google states that a page cannot be marked as a featured snippet, and that its systems determine whether a page would make a good one for a given search.

### Do I need FAQ markup?

Google states that no special schema.org structured data is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data remains useful to describe a page and its entity, provided it matches the visible text.

### Does a longer page answer better?

Length is not the measure. A page answers well when each question it covers has a direct, sourced answer that can be read on its own.
