# You are checked by the people you want to work with.

> For investors and family offices: being checked by founders and co-investors, staying discreet without leaving the record to others, and what is out of scope.

Founders, co-investors and advisors may look up an investor before a first conversation. Some investors want to be found; others want to stay out of view. This page covers both, and says where this approach stops.

Reputation management for an investor or a family office is the work of putting in order what can be found about the firm and its principals, in the sources they control and by requesting corrections elsewhere, whether the aim is to be identified easily or to remain discreet. It fits an investor whose record is incomplete, confused with another firm, or written entirely by others. It is not investor relations, it makes no statement about performance, and it does not conceal information that the law requires to be public.

## Two opposite situations

**The investor who needs to be found.** A fund that depends on founders choosing it, or on co-investors inviting it, is compared with others before anyone makes contact. If the description is vague or old, the comparison is made without it. The corresponding symptom is described in [competitors recommended by AI](https://mohammedteto.com/problems/competitors-recommended-by-ai/).

**The investor who prefers discretion.** A family office may want no public profile at all. Silence does not remove the record: registers, the companies invested in, the press and the principals' other roles continue to describe it. The choice is between a short record that is accurate and a record assembled by others.

Both situations call for the same first step, which is to know what is said today.

<a id="specifics"></a>

## What is specific to an investor's record

**Part of it depends on other companies.** What a portfolio company publishes about its shareholders, its board and its financing rounds becomes part of the investor's record. When the investor's account and the company's differ, both are weakened.

**Part of it is in regulatory registers.** In the United States, the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site states that it "provides information on Investment Adviser firms regulated by the SEC and/or state securities regulators" ([SEC, IAPD](https://adviserinfo.sec.gov/)), and FINRA's BrokerCheck provides a summary report on employment history, qualifications and disclosure events for people who sell securities or give financial advice ([FINRA](https://www.finra.org/investors/protect-your-money/ask-and-check)). In the United Kingdom, the Financial Conduct Authority describes its Financial Services Register as "a public record of firms, individuals and other bodies that are, or have been, authorised by us or the PRA" ([FCA](https://www.fca.org.uk/firms/financial-services-register)). Where such a register applies, it is a source that anyone can check, and other sources should be consistent with it.

**Names are easily confused.** Investment firms often share words in their names, and a family office can carry the name of a family that has several branches and several vehicles. See [confused with someone else](https://mohammedteto.com/problems/entity-confusion/).

**The person and the vehicle are read together.** A principal's earlier career, board seats and personal investments can be attached to the firm, whether or not the firm mentions them.

## What can be published, and who decides

A regulated firm is not free to publish what it likes. Rules on the marketing of investment services differ by country and by type of firm, and whether a given text may be published is a question for the firm's compliance function and its counsel. This work does not answer it.

In practice, the work keeps to facts that involve no claim about returns: who the firm is, who leads it, what it invests in, since when, and which sources confirm it. Publishing them remains subject to the firm's compliance review. Performance figures are outside the scope of the work.

## Where the approach fits, and where it does not

**It fits** an investor whose description is outdated, mixed with another firm's, or absent where founders and partners look.

**It fits a discreet principal** who wants a minimal, accurate record in place of an accidental one.

**It does not fit** a wish to hide ownership, a registration or a past event that is accurately recorded. Requests of that kind are outside this work.

**It is not enough alone** in a dispute, an enforcement matter or a contested transaction. Counsel comes first.

## How it starts

With a [private assessment](https://mohammedteto.com/private-assessment/). For a principal, the engagement is the one described in [reputation and authority for leaders](https://mohammedteto.com/leaders/); when the subject is the firm, it is the one for [organizations](https://mohammedteto.com/organizations/). Both follow [The Authority Architecture System](https://mohammedteto.com/method/). ## Frequently asked questions

### Can a family office stay private and still manage its reputation?

Yes. Managing the record does not mean publishing more. It can mean checking what registers, portfolio companies and the press already say, correcting what is wrong, and keeping one short accurate description available for those who look.

### Is this investor relations?

No. Investor relations is communication with a firm's own investors and with the market. This work concerns what any third party finds when it looks up the firm or its principals.

### Can you publish our track record?

No performance claim is written as part of this work. Whether and how a firm may present its results depends on rules that vary by country, and is decided by its compliance function and its counsel.

### Why would a founder look up an investor in an AI assistant?

For the same reason a founder would use a search engine: to learn who the firm is and how it compares with others before replying. The answer is built from whatever sources are available, which is why their accuracy matters.
