# Clients know the partners. The record has to show the firm.

A professional firm sells the judgment of named people. Its record is split between the firm, its partners and its practices. This page explains what that means for how the firm is described, and whether this approach suits it.

Reputation and AI visibility work for a professional-services firm is the work of making the firm, its partners and its practice areas identifiable as distinct entities that support one another, with evidence that respects client confidentiality. It fits law firms, advisory firms, accounting firms and similar partnerships whose expertise is real and whose public record is fragmented. It does not write claims that the firm's professional rules forbid, and it does not guarantee that an assistant will name the firm.

## Is this your situation?

- **The firm is described through one partner** Ask about the firm and the answer is a biography.
- **A partner arrived, or left** Their record still points to the previous firm, or yours still presents someone who is gone.
- **The firm merged or changed its name** Both names circulate.
- **Practice areas are a list of words** Nothing connects a practice to the people and the work behind it.
- **Several offices, several descriptions** Each one presents the firm in its own way.

## What is specific to a professional firm

**Three levels of entity.** The firm, each partner and each practice area can all be the subject of a question. An answer about a practice can draw on what exists about the partners who lead it; an answer about a partner can draw on the firm. If the three levels are not linked explicitly, they may be connected by inference, or not at all. The principle is explained in [entity optimization](https://mohammedteto.com/entity-optimization/).

**The subject matter may be held to a higher standard.** Google states that its systems give even more weight to content that aligns with strong experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness for topics that could significantly affect people's health, financial stability or safety ([Google Search Central, creating helpful content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)). Some of what financial and legal advisers publish may fall within such topics. That is a statement about Google's search systems; the sources cited here say nothing equivalent about other assistants.

**Structured data has a type for it.** Schema.org defines `LegalService` as "a business that provides legally-oriented services, advice and representation, e.g. law firms", with the more specific types `Attorney` and `Notary` ([schema.org, LegalService](https://schema.org/LegalService)). Markup of this kind describes the firm; it has to match what the page shows, and it creates no entitlement to appear in an answer.

**The best evidence is confidential.** Matters and engagements often cannot be named. What the firm can publish is its analysis, its people's qualifications, its roles in professional bodies, and the cases its clients have agreed to make public.

**Conduct rules apply.** Some professions' rules restrict how members describe themselves. Those rules differ by profession and by jurisdiction. Whether a given wording is permitted is decided by the firm and its regulator, not by this work.

## Work on the firm or on the partners?

| What you observe | Where the work is |
|---|---|
| Partners are described accurately, the firm is not | The firm's entity and its link to each partner |
| The firm is known, its practices are not distinguished | Practice pages tied to named people and published work |
| A partner's record still points to a former firm | The partner's own sources, then the firm's |
| Other firms are named for the questions your clients ask | Independent sources: see [competitors recommended by AI](https://mohammedteto.com/problems/competitors-recommended-by-ai/) |
| Two names for one firm after a merger | Names, dates and the relationship between them |

## Where the approach fits, and where it does not

**It fits** a firm with established practice and a record that does not reflect it: unlinked partner pages, an unclear name, practices that no source describes.

**It does not fit** a firm looking for volume: many pages for many search terms, written for reach. That is a different objective.

**It depends on the partners.** Their biographies, publications and profiles are part of the firm's record. Without their participation the work stops at the firm's own pages.

**It is bounded by confidentiality and conduct rules**, which the firm applies.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does a law firm appear in AI answers?

Through the sources available about the firm and its lawyers: its own pages, professional registers, directories, publications and the press. No provider guarantees that a firm will be named. What a firm can do is make those sources accurate, consistent and linked to named people.

### Should each partner have a detailed page?

A partner's page is where the firm states who the person is, what they are qualified to do and what they have published. Without it, a question about the partner may be answered from other sources, which may be older or belong to a former firm.

### Can the firm cite its matters as evidence?

Only those the client has agreed to make public, and within the profession's rules. Analysis, qualifications and roles in professional bodies are evidence that does not name a client; the firm checks it against its own duties.

### Can we say we are specialists in a field?

That depends on the rules of your profession and jurisdiction, which may restrict the word. The firm and its regulator decide; this work uses the wording the firm is entitled to use.
