Google states that there is nothing special to do to appear in AI Overviews beyond being eligible for Search. This page lists what that means, and the controls a site has.

An AI Overview is, in Google's words, an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper, shown in Search results when Google's systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful. A page can appear in it as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

## What the cited sources do not cover

- Which queries trigger an AI Overview.
- How supporting links are chosen among eligible pages.
- A separate report for AI Overviews in Search Console.

Where the documentation is silent, this page says so and does not fill the gap.

## Access and controls

The controls are those of Search: `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet` and `noindex`. Google lists these as the controls for what is shown from a page in its AI features. `Google-Extended` is a different control: Google states that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search; it is covered on the [Gemini](https://mohammedteto.com/platforms/gemini-visibility/) page.

## A test protocol for Google AI Overviews

This is a procedure to follow, not a result. No test of Google AI Overviews is reported on this page.

1. **Check eligibility.** Is the page indexed, and is a snippet allowed?
2. **List the queries that matter to you.** Which ones trigger an Overview is not documented.
3. **Search each one under the same conditions every time** (account state, location, language), record those conditions, and note whether an Overview appears at all.
4. **Record the supporting links** shown, and whether yours is among them.
5. **Compare with the organic results** for the same query.
6. **Repeat at a fixed interval.** Google says an Overview is shown when its systems determine it can be helpful, so record each time whether one appears.

What to record for each run is listed in [what is recorded](https://mohammedteto.com/ai-search-intelligence/#record); how many prompts a reading needs is in [how many prompts make a reading](https://mohammedteto.com/ai-search-intelligence/#sample). The rules a measurement must meet before it is published on this site are in the [research methodology](https://mohammedteto.com/research/methodology/).

## What to do with the result

- **No Overview for your queries** Nothing to correct; note it and re-test later.
- **An Overview appears and you are not a supporting link** Check eligibility: indexed, snippet allowed. Beyond that, how links are chosen is not documented.
- **You are linked and the summary is wrong** See [inaccurate or outdated AI answers](https://mohammedteto.com/problems/inaccurate-ai-results/).
- **You want to opt out** Use the snippet controls, knowing what else they remove.

No one can guarantee a mention, a citation or a position in Google AI Overviews. What can be worked on is access, the clarity of the entity, the evidence on the page and the independent sources. The method is [The Authority Architecture System](https://mohammedteto.com/method/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a way to optimize specifically for AI Overviews?

Google states that there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations necessary beyond eligibility for Search.

### Can I see AI Overview clicks in Search Console?

Google states that this traffic is included in the Performance report within the Web search type. The documentation cited here does not describe a separate report.

### Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

Google states that Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search. The controls for AI features in Search are the snippet controls.
