AI Overviews: the entry condition is Google Search.
Google states that there is nothing special to do to appear in AI Overviews beyond being eligible for Search. This page lists what that means, and the controls a site has.
An AI Overview is, in Google's words, an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper, shown in Search results when Google's systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful. A page can appear in it as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

What the cited sources do not cover
- Which queries trigger an AI Overview.
- How supporting links are chosen among eligible pages.
- A separate report for AI Overviews in Search Console.
Where the documentation is silent, this page says so and does not fill the gap.
Access and controls
The controls are those of Search: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Google lists these as the controls for what is shown from a page in its AI features. Google-Extended is a different control: Google states that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search; it is covered on the Gemini page.
A test protocol for Google AI Overviews
This is a procedure to follow, not a result. No test of Google AI Overviews is reported on this page.
- Check eligibility. Is the page indexed, and is a snippet allowed?
- List the queries that matter to you. Which ones trigger an Overview is not documented.
- Search each one under the same conditions every time (account state, location, language), record those conditions, and note whether an Overview appears at all.
- Record the supporting links shown, and whether yours is among them.
- Compare with the organic results for the same query.
- Repeat at a fixed interval. Google says an Overview is shown when its systems determine it can be helpful, so record each time whether one appears.
What to record for each run is listed in what is recorded; how many prompts a reading needs is in how many prompts make a reading. The rules a measurement must meet before it is published on this site are in the research methodology.
What to do with the result
- No Overview for your queries Nothing to correct; note it and re-test later.
- An Overview appears and you are not a supporting link Check eligibility: indexed, snippet allowed. Beyond that, how links are chosen is not documented.
- You are linked and the summary is wrong See inaccurate or outdated AI answers.
- You want to opt out Use the snippet controls, knowing what else they remove.
No one can guarantee a mention, a citation or a position in Google AI Overviews. What can be worked on is access, the clarity of the entity, the evidence on the page and the independent sources. The method is The Authority Architecture System.
