Problem

For your category, the assistant names others.

This is a question about the category, not about you. The useful reading is which sources the assistant used to build its list, and whether you are in them.

When an assistant is asked which providers to consider in a category and lists others, the answer, when the assistant searches the web, can draw on the sources it retrieves for that category: comparisons, directories, reviews, reference pages. The diagnosis starts by reading the sources it cites. No one can guarantee a place in the list, and an offer that does is selling what it does not control.

How to recognize it

  • A category question leaves you out "Which firms should I consider for…"
  • You are named, last or in passing With less detail than the others.
  • You are described by an old offer While competitors are described by their current one.
  • The list changes from one assistant to the next And you appear in some.

If the assistant has nothing to say even when asked about you by name, start with not mentioned by ChatGPT.

Why it can appear

The question is turned into several searches. Google states that its AI features may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response (Google Search Central, AI features). The list can therefore come from pages retrieved for a broader question than the one asked. Measured figures for other assistants, and their limits, are in why rankings do not guarantee citations.

The sources for the category do not mention you. A list can be assembled from pages that compare, rank or review. If you are absent from the pages the assistant cites, your own site has to carry the whole case alone.

Your category is not stated the way the market states it. If your site describes what you do in words no one else uses, the pages that define the category may not connect to you.

The entity is unclear. A group, a brand and a product with similar names can be counted as one, or missed. See entity optimization.

Your pages do not answer the question in a form that can be quoted. See answer engine optimization.

These are possible causes. Which one applies is read from the sources cited, not assumed.

How to verify it

  1. Write the category questions a buyer would ask, in their words, not yours.
  2. Run them in each assistant, several times, and keep the answers and the sources cited.
  3. List the sources. Which domains come back? Are you on those pages?
  4. Read how the named competitors are described, and from which sources.
  5. Check your own description. Is your category stated plainly on your site and on the profiles that describe you?

What can be corrected

Finding What can be done
Your category is unclear on your own pages State it in the words the market uses, the same way everywhere
You are absent from the pages the assistant cites Ask to be considered where inclusion is on merit; publish what makes inclusion justified
You are described by an old offer Correct the sources that carry it: see inaccurate or outdated AI answers
The cited pages are paid placements Nothing to request; note it and move on

What cannot be guaranteed

A recommendation is the assistant's choice at the moment of the question. It varies with the wording, the engine and the day. Being present in the sources makes inclusion possible; it does not make it certain. Paying for placements presented as editorial is not a remedy, and puts credibility at risk.

Evidence and sources needed

  • A stated category And a description others can repeat.
  • Proof for each claim See weak independent sources.
  • Independent sources That place you in the category in their own words.
  • Comparisons that are fair Where you say what you are not the right choice for.

How to measure improvement

Two readings, per engine: whether you are named for the category prompts, and which sources the answer cites. Share of voice needs a large, stable prompt set to mean anything; with a small one, report presence and sources only.

When to ask for an assessment

When the same competitors come back across assistants and you cannot tell which sources put them there. A private assessment records what each assistant says today, with the sources it cites, and sets out what to address first. The work that follows usually sits in AI Search Optimization, within The Authority Architecture System; see the engagement for organizations or for leaders.
