Everything an assistant can find about you was written by you.
Your site is clear and your profiles are complete, and the answer still reads like your own brochure, or hedges. The question is what anyone else has confirmed.
Weak source authority is the situation in which the only sources that describe a person or an organization are the ones it controls: its site, its profiles, its press releases. An assistant can repeat them, and finds nothing independent to set beside them. It is addressed by evidence and by independent sources, which depend on other people and cannot be produced on demand.
How to recognize it
- The answer cites only your own pages Or cites nothing.
- The description repeats your wording Tagline included.
- The answer hedges "According to its website…", "claims to…".
- Competitors are described from third-party sources And you are not.
Why it can appear
- The work has never been written about by others Which can be the case for discreet or recent activity.
- Coverage exists and cannot be attributed It names the company and not the person, or uses another spelling.
- Claims are made without evidence So that a third party has nothing to verify and repeat.
- What exists is promotional Paid placements, reposted press releases.
What separates being known from being confirmed is set out in authority, awareness and reputation compared.
How to verify it
- Ask about yourself in each assistant and keep the sources cited.
- Sort the sources into three groups. Yours, paid or promotional, independent.
- Search your name without your own domains. What remains?
- For each important claim on your site, ask who else states it.
- Check attribution. Do the independent pages name you the way your own pages do?
What can be corrected
| Finding | What can be done |
|---|---|
| Claims without evidence | Publish the evidence: a named client who agrees, a figure with its source and date, a described method |
| Independent coverage exists and is not connected to you | Make the names match; link to it from your reference page |
| Expertise that exists and is not public | Publish it in your own name: a paper, a talk, a documented method |
| A reference entry is thin or outdated | Propose additions through the source's own rules; on an existing Wikipedia article, a disclosed proposal on the talk page (Wikipedia, conflict of interest). Whether an entry exists at all is the source's decision |
| Only promotional mentions | Stop adding to them; they do not confirm anything |
Which evidence counts, and why, is in which evidence counts.
What cannot be guaranteed
Independent sources decide for themselves. No one can promise coverage, a reference entry or a citation, and paying for a placement presented as editorial is not independence. Building this takes as long as others take to notice and write; there is no fixed duration.
Evidence and sources needed
- Proof for each claim that matters Held in a form that can be shown.
- A public record in your own name Publications, talks, roles.
- Third parties with a reason to write A client, an institution, a publication in your field.
- A reference page that connects them With links to each independent source. See entity optimization.
Google describes trust as the most important of the qualities its systems try to reward, and says the others contribute to it (Google Search Central, creating helpful content). That statement concerns Google Search.
How to measure improvement
Two counts, kept over time: the independent domains that mention you, and the share of them among the sources an assistant cites when asked about you. How these signals are read is described in how authority is observed.
When to ask for an assessment
When you cannot tell which of your claims are confirmed anywhere, or when a transaction or an appointment will put your record in front of someone who checks. A private assessment records what each assistant says today, with the sources it cites, and sets out what to address first. The work that follows is the Evidence and Source Authority layer of The Authority Architecture System; see the engagements for leaders and organizations.
