Problem

ChatGPT has little or nothing to say about you.

Absence has several possible causes, and the first to check is the simplest: whether the assistant is allowed to read your site at all.

Being absent from AI answers means that an assistant, asked directly about a person or an organization, has little to say or says it cannot find reliable information. It is different from being left out of a recommendation, where the question is about a category. Absence is checked in order: access first, then sources, then identity.

How to recognize it

  • A direct question gets a vague answer "I could not find reliable information about…"
  • The answer describes a namesake And says nothing about you. See confused with someone else.
  • The answer is generic It repeats your own tagline and nothing more.
  • Present in one assistant, absent in another Which is itself a finding.

If you are described correctly and simply not listed when someone asks for the best providers in a category, see competitors recommended by AI.

Why it can appear

The assistant cannot read the site. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI, crawlers). A robots.txt rule written to block AI crawlers in general can have that effect. See what the providers document.

The pages are not eligible. For Google's AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link (Google Search Central, AI features).

There is little to retrieve. A site with few pages in text, no page that states who you are, and no independent source that mentions you gives an assistant little to work from.

The identity is unclear. A name shared with others, or written several ways, can leave the assistant unable to tell which entity is meant. See confused with someone else.

How to verify it

  1. Ask directly. "Who is…", "What does … do", in each assistant, several times.
  2. Check access. Read your robots.txt: is OAI-SearchBot, or any other crawler you rely on, disallowed?
  3. Check indexing. Are your main pages indexed, with a snippet?
  4. Check what exists. Search your name: which pages describe you, and how many of them are not yours?
  5. Check identity. Is your name written the same way on your site and profiles, and is there a namesake?
  6. Compare engines. Record where you appear and where you do not.

What can be corrected

Finding What can be done
A crawler is blocked by mistake Change the rule; OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) and its training crawler (GPTBot) are set separately in robots.txt (OpenAI, crawlers)
Pages are not indexed Fix what prevents indexing: this is SEO work
No page states who you are Publish one reference page, in text
Important content is in images or scripts Put it in text; Google lists this among its best practices (Google Search Central, AI features)
Nothing independent mentions you See weak independent sources

What cannot be guaranteed

Being readable is a condition, not a result. No one can guarantee that an assistant will mention you for a given question, and the provider documentation cited on this page states conditions for being shown, not how sources are chosen for a given answer. Google states that no special file or markup is needed to appear in its AI features, so adding one is not a remedy.

Evidence and sources needed

  • A reference page That states the name, the role or activity, and the facts that matter.
  • Structured data that matches it To state the identity in a form machines read. See entity optimization.
  • Sources you do not control That mention you in their own words.
  • Substance on the page The paper that introduced the term GEO reports that adding citations, quotations and statistics to a source can boost its visibility in generated answers, in a controlled benchmark (arXiv:2311.09735). It measures sources already retrieved, not whether an entity is mentioned; see what the research measured.

How to measure improvement

The metric is presence: the share of relevant prompts, over repeated runs, in which you are mentioned, recorded per engine. Definitions and their limits are in the metrics, and what each one means.

When to ask for an assessment

When access and indexing are in order and the absence persists, or when you appear in one assistant and not in another. A private assessment records what each assistant says today, with the sources it cites, and sets out what to address first. In The Authority Architecture System this reading is the first layer, Perception Intelligence; the engagements are described for leaders and organizations.
